Why Tesla body work requires specialized knowledge

Tesla bodies use bonded aluminum chassis (Model S, Model X) and high-strength steel + aluminum hybrid construction (Model 3, Model Y). Aluminum requires different welding equipment, fillers, and structural protocols than steel — done with steel-shop equipment, aluminum repair fails in the next collision.

Tesla also carries high-voltage battery systems and dense ADAS sensor arrays (Autopilot cameras, ultrasonic sensors, radar). Body repair affects sensor positioning, so post-repair calibration is required to restore Autopilot function. We follow Tesla manufacturer service protocols for de-energization, repair, and recalibration.

Process · 03

Tesla collision repair process

Six-step Tesla-specific process layering high-voltage safety, aluminum repair, and ADAS recalibration onto standard collision sequence.

01

Tesla Estimate

Pre-disassembly inspection accounting for high-voltage components, aluminum panels, and ADAS sensors.

02

Safe De-Energization

Battery isolated before structural work near the pack per Tesla service protocol.

03

Aluminum Repair

MIG/TIG welding, structural riveting, bonding agents per Tesla spec.

04

Paint Match

Spectrophotometer match — Tesla paint codes (Deep Blue Metallic, Multi-Coat Red, etc.) require test spray.

05

ADAS Recalibration

Autopilot cameras, ultrasonic sensors, radar recalibrated to factory spec.

06

High-Voltage Verification

Isolation testing and re-energization with battery management system check.

Tesla paint matching — what to know

Tesla paint codes use proprietary formulations. Multi-Coat Red, Deep Blue Metallic, Pearl White, and other Tesla colors require spectrophotometer match and test spray before any panel work. We get it right in-house.

Parts · 05

OEM vs aftermarket for Tesla

We push for Tesla OEM parts where safety, fit, or warranty preservation matters. Tesla parts availability has improved in 2026 but can still extend timelines on rare models.

Insurance · 06

Insurance coverage for Tesla body work

Tesla Insurance, GEICO, Allstate, State Farm, Progressive, and other major carriers all cover Tesla repair at our shop. Under NY Insurance Law §2610 you can choose D. MacArthur even if your carrier suggests a Tesla-Approved Body Network shop.

FAQ · 07

Frequently asked questions about Tesla body shop work

Do you have to be Tesla-certified to repair a Tesla?

No — Tesla certification is a Tesla program, not a regulatory requirement. We perform Tesla bodywork to manufacturer specifications with the appropriate equipment.

Will Tesla repair affect my warranty?

Tesla warranties cover defects, not collision damage. Properly executed collision repair following manufacturer protocols preserves your warranty on unrelated components.

Why is Tesla repair more expensive?

Aluminum welding, ADAS recalibration, high-voltage isolation, and Tesla-specific parts all add cost. Most Tesla jobs run 20–40% more than equivalent steel-body damage.

Can you recalibrate Autopilot cameras?

Yes — in-house static and dynamic calibration. Some procedures require Tesla service center steps; we coordinate when needed.

How long do Tesla repairs take?

Minor 1–2 weeks. Mid-sized 2–4 weeks. Major structural 4–8 weeks. Parts availability is the main variable.

Do you work on Cybertruck?

Yes — Cybertruck stainless-steel exoskeleton requires specialty panel replacement (non-paintable stainless). We handle Cybertruck damage.
