What is frame and unibody repair, and when do you need it?

Modern vehicles aren't built on traditional ladder frames — they ride on engineered unibody structures where every millimeter of dimensional accuracy affects handling, tire wear, crash protection, and ADAS calibration. Frame and unibody repair is the structural restoration of that geometry after a collision.

Any vehicle that's been in a moderate or severe collision should have frame measurement before signing off on the repair as complete. Visible cosmetic damage often hides structural pull that won't show up until tires wear unevenly, the car starts pulling, or the next collision exposes failed crumple zones.

When you need it
  • After any moderate-to-severe collision (front, rear, or side impact)
  • Pulling, tracking, or alignment problems that won't stay aligned
  • Uneven tire wear after a previous accident
  • Used-car frame check before purchase
  • After a deer strike with engine-bay deformation
  • After a rollover or curb-strike
  • Insurance-required frame inspection before release

How does frame and unibody repair work?

Frame repair at D. MacArthur Auto Body follows a five-step process — diagnostic measurement, damage assessment against factory blueprint, controlled hydraulic pulling, re-measurement to verify spec, and final alignment.

01

Diagnostic Measurement

Electronic frame rack captures dozens of structural reference points (control point locations, longitudinal rails, suspension mount points).

02

Damage Assessment

Measurements compared to the manufacturer's exact factory blueprint. Each out-of-spec point identified with millimeter precision.

03

Controlled Pulling

Hydraulic pulls in precise directions to restore geometry. Multiple smaller pulls instead of one big yank — prevents over-correction.

04

Re-Measurement

Every point re-verified against factory tolerance. Before-and-after printouts kept on file and provided to the customer.

05

Alignment & Test Drive

Final wheel alignment, road test, and ADAS recalibration if equipped. Steering wheel center, tracking, and braking all verified.

Cost · 03

How much does frame repair cost?

Frame repair pricing depends on the severity of the damage and the amount of pulling required. Frame work is almost always part of a larger collision repair, not a standalone job.

Light Pull
$500 – $1,500
Single-direction pull on a unibody rail. Often part of a larger collision repair.
Moderate Frame Work
$1,500 – $4,000
Multi-point pull, multiple rails, full re-measurement.
Major Structural
$4,000 – $12,000+
Severe frame damage with sectioning, replacement of structural panels, full re-measurement.
Total Loss Threshold
Varies
Some damage exceeds repair economics — we document and present the case to your carrier for total-loss determination.

Frame work without good before-and-after measurement is malpractice. We provide measurement printouts on every frame job — you get to see exactly what was bent and exactly what was fixed.

Timeline · 04

How long does frame repair take?

Frame work itself is fast — most of the timeline is the bodywork around it.

1 – 2 days
Frame measurement, pull, and re-verification (alone).
1 – 3 weeks
Frame work as part of a typical mid-sized collision repair (with panels, paint, and parts).
3 – 6 weeks
Major structural collision with sectioning and OEM parts ordering.
Insurance · 05

Frame repair for insurance claims

Frame work is always part of a collision claim. We document measurements with photos, provide before/after printouts, and bill the insurer direct. Most carriers approve frame work without pushback when measurements show clear damage.

If a carrier tries to deny frame work that the measurements show is needed, we escalate with documentation. We've never lost that fight in over 50 years — measurements are objective.

Makes & Models · 06

Which makes do we frame repair?

Every make — but unibody construction varies. Steel unibodies (most mainstream cars) pull straightforwardly. Aluminum and mixed-metal unibodies (Tesla, BMW i-Series, Audi A8, some Range Rovers) require different equipment and technique. We have both.

Tesla bonded-aluminum chassis is the most specialized — bonding agents, riveting protocols, and high-voltage system isolation all factor in. We handle it.

Nassau Coverage · 07

Frame repair for Nassau County drivers

Nassau drivers come to us for frame work after Southern State and Northern State Parkway accidents — typically higher-speed impacts than NYC city-street collisions, which means more frame damage in the typical incident.

We handle frame work for Nassau-area collision repairs from Long Beach to Hempstead, Elmont to Massapequa. Direct insurance billing.

Jamaica · Honda Civic

Honda Civic from Jamaica brought in after a moderate front-end collision. Computerized frame measurement showed 8mm pull on the right front rail. Pulled to factory spec, panels repaired, full color-matched repaint. $9,200 total, 14 working days.

Valley Stream · Ford F-150

Ford F-150 from Valley Stream after a rear-end collision on the Belt Parkway. Bed structural pull, hitch reinforcement replacement, full QC measurement. State Farm claim, $7,400, 10 working days.

Hempstead · Mercedes GLE

Mercedes GLE from Hempstead after a side-impact collision. Aluminum unibody pull with manufacturer-spec measurement, structural panel replacement, ADAS recalibration. Allstate claim, $18,400, 22 working days.

Bayside · Toyota Corolla

Toyota Corolla from Bayside with reported pulling after a previous accident. Re-measurement showed 6mm offset never properly corrected by the original repair shop. Re-pulled to factory spec. Out-of-pocket inspection + repair, $2,800.

FAQ · 09

Frequently asked questions about frame & unibody repair

Can a bent frame really be fixed?

Most unibody damage can be restored to factory spec with proper measurement and controlled pulling. Severe damage may require sectioning. We give honest assessment after measurement.

How do I know my frame is straight after repair?

We provide before/after measurement printouts. You see exactly what was bent and what was corrected — millimeter-level documentation.

Will the car pull after frame repair?

If the frame is properly measured to factory spec, no. Pulling after repair usually means the frame work wasn't completed or alignment wasn't done. We test-drive before delivery.

Will insurance pay for frame repair?

Yes — frame work that's documented with measurements gets approved. We've never had a carrier successfully deny frame work backed by measurement printouts.

Will the car be safe after frame repair?

Yes — when restored to factory geometry. The crumple zones, airbag mounts, and structural reinforcements perform as designed when the frame is back to spec. Skipping or shortcutting frame work is what creates safety risk.

Will my car be a 'total loss' because of the frame damage?

Depends on the cost of repair vs vehicle value. We document and present the case — sometimes total-loss is the right answer (you get a fair payout); sometimes repair is. We help you understand both.

Will frame repair show on a Carfax?

Insurance claims involving structural damage are typically reported. The repair itself doesn't change that — but properly documented repair using OEM parts and factory procedures preserves value better than skipped or shortcutted work.

Do you do frame inspection for used-car purchases?

Yes — pre-purchase frame measurement. $200–$400 depending on complexity. We give you measurement printouts you can use to negotiate.
