Should you file a claim or pay out of pocket?

Filing a claim makes sense for major damage. Out-of-pocket often makes sense for minor work. Here's the decision framework.

Section 01

The break-even math

Start with your deductible. If repair cost is below your deductible, paying out-of-pocket is the only option — insurance doesn't pay below the deductible threshold.

If repair is above the deductible but close (within $500), out-of-pocket may still make sense to avoid claim impact on rates and Carfax. Above $1,000+ over deductible, filing typically makes financial sense.

Section 02

Rate impact factors

At-fault collision claims typically increase rates. Comprehensive claims (vandalism, hail) typically don't affect rates. Not-at-fault collision claims (someone hit you) often don't affect rates if properly documented, but can in some states.

Claim frequency matters — one claim in a 3-year period typically has small impact; multiple claims can significantly raise rates. Your specific carrier and policy determine the exact impact.

Section 03

Carfax and resale value

Any reported insurance claim shows up on Carfax. Even properly repaired damage can reduce resale value 5–15% depending on severity and timing. Out-of-pocket repair doesn't trigger a Carfax entry (no claim filed), preserving value.

For lease vehicles, this matters less — you're returning the car. For owned vehicles you'll sell eventually, the resale impact can outweigh the deductible savings.

Section 04

How to decide

Get a body shop estimate first. If it's below deductible — pay cash. If it's $200–$800 over deductible — usually pay cash to avoid claim impact. If it's $1,000+ over deductible or involves structural damage requiring frame measurement — file the claim.

We give you both options at D. MacArthur Auto Body — written estimates with cash and insurance pricing both shown. You decide.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much will my rates go up if I file?

Depends on carrier, claim type, and history. Typical at-fault collision increase is 20–40% for 3 years. Not-at-fault often zero.

Can I pay out-of-pocket and still get an insurance estimate?

Yes — we provide free written estimates regardless of payment method.

Does paying cash affect repair quality?

No. Same shop, same equipment, same crew, same warranty. Only the billing changes.

Not sure what the repair costs?

Send a few photos and we'll get you a written estimate, no obligation.
